Revisiting the Annual Alumni Reunion 2018

Over 160 alumni and friends gathered back on campus for our 11th Annual Alumni Reunion. For the classes of 1978, 1988, 1993 and 1998, it was an extra special occasion, marking their respective 40th, 30th, 25th and 20th anniversaries since graduation. Guests travelled from far and wide to join the celebrations, including China, Malaysia and the Caribbean.

Alumni enjoyed tours of the campus, where they visited old and new landmarks, providing an opportunity to reminisce about student days. Particular memories were triggered when revisiting Firth Court and the Arts Tower with its famous Paternoster lift. Recent developments such as the Diamond, Jessop West, and the Information Commons impressed guests illustrating the tremendous changes that have taken place on campus in recent years. We were delighted to hear from current academics Professor Allan Pacey from the Department of Oncology and Metabolism and Professor Stephen Beck, Head of Multidisciplinary Engineering Education, who delivered insightful and entertaining presentations on their current research, in the impressive surroundings of the Diamond.

In the evening, guests arrived at Firth Court for the Reunion Dinner and Dance, hosted by Professor Gill Valentine, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Guest speaker and leading economist, Lord Jim O’Neill (BA Economics, 1978, MA Economics 1980, Hon LittD 2014), gave a brief overview of his career and shared his memories of Sheffield, both as a student and an alumnus.

The band Rock and Soul Machine provided lively entertainment, encouraging guests on to the dancefloor with well-loved tunes from recent decades. For anyone wanting to continue the celebrations, alumni could end the night at the Students’ Union – bringing back many a fond memory into the early hours.

Alumni and friends enjoy the 2018 Annual Reunion
