How financial support is helping students like Richard to experience a Sheffield education.
Returning to education as a mature student is a big decision. But Richard Vyse knew it was the only way he could achieve his dream of working in international child protection.
Things took a difficult turn in his first year when he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite this devastating setback, Richard graduated with a first class degree. It meant so much to him and his family.
Last year, Richard went on to do a Masters degree in Law. Balancing his studies with a part-time job and family responsibilities was always going to be hard. But it was made so much easier thanks to graduates who donated to support his scholarship of £10,000 towards fees and living expenses.
Richard has since gone on to study International Humanitarian Action in Groningen and Malta. And he’s secured a prestigious internship in Mumbai, in the field of community protection. He’s working hard to get the experience he needs for his dream career – fighting for the rights of vulnerable people.
“It’s difficult to convey how much the scholarship has meant to me and my family. When your bank balance comes down to pennies, every single penny really makes a difference.”
Richard Vyse, LLB Law 2017, LLM Law 2018
Why students need your help
Richard’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Sheffield donors. Every little bit of worry that the scholarship took away allowed him to concentrate on his studies.
But each year, we receive over 1,100 applications from other talented postgraduate students with big ambitions. Sadly we have to say no to one in seven of them. We need your help to give more low-income students like Richard the chance to continue their education.
For many prestigious careers including research, engineering and law, postgraduate study is becoming more and more essential. By making a gift today, you’ll help make sure that people of all backgrounds are represented in these important jobs – making our society fairer.
Scholarships support bright students from low income, often disadvantaged backgrounds. By making a gift today, you’ll support a student who:
- Has a real financial need
- Is from a background that is traditionally unlikely to go to
- Has clear career goals and a
drive to study
Double the impact
We are committed to helping students from a range of backgrounds achieve their full potential at Sheffield. As well practical support and bursaries, we also match fund every donation to postgraduate scholarships to ensure that more students will benefit.
